      • Urbis Design Day 2012

Taking on Urbis Design Day for the third year, The Kohler Design Centre was once again transformed into a Wonderland of Colour complete with live and installed art exhibits, intense and innovative use of colour, freestyle painting zones and full body artworks. Teaming up with collaborative partners, Art Associates and Resene, their efforts were rewarded with a record KDC attendance level of more than 2500 people being entertained by ‘artists in residence’, including an installation in the working area of the RainCan shower head space and bathroom designs such as the Kohler Escale bath tub being filled to overflowing with M&Ms. Other standouts were the ever popular photo booth, Candy Floss machine and Resene colour-coded cupcakes. Auckland-based art consultants Art Associates curated an exhibition of contemporary New Zealand artworks and current Resene colour swatches in each of the Kohler bathroom suites and commissioned artists Jonathan Brown, Jessica Pearless and Jesse Watson to create site-specific works on the day based on the 2012 theme of “Colour in Motion”. Brown’s kinetic painting machine captivated attendees in the Sok/Laminar space, while Jessica Pearless (highly regarded for her site-specific vinyl installations in sites as diverse as Auckland’s Britomart and Nelson’s Arthouse Architecture) overtook the entire Candide room and Jesse Watson transformed the Kohler Spa into an artist’s studio for the day, creating an effervescent, 4-metre long canvas work. Interactivity was the name of the game for Kohler, with artists and body-painted models mingling with the crowd and Resene paints and a live freestyle canvas positioned at the entrance so that all visitors could play their own part in creating an outstanding work of art.
